"Fatigue"
It's the word of the decade. Don't you agree?
Many a days and nights I become so exhausted and dog-tired that I
can feel the next moment I am dead. The thing is that I am generally
considered as an energetic man but the fact is sometimes I am so tired
of my life (now, sometimes is almost always). Every day I just get up
and hang around for an hour and then here I go again. Monotony. The
holy monotony. The funny thing is that since few days ago, I, myself,
didn't realize that I was tired of my life and, believe me, it's not a
good thing. As a matter of fact, it's a disaster because in this
situation you are acting like a robot with a slot in its back in order
to be given the instructions for its next activity. Understanding too
late is a goddamn disaster because sometimes it becomes too late. So I
asked myself, after I said: "didn't see that coming!" what I could do.
And suddenly I found myself, dreaming like a 10 year-old school girl
about where I want to live. I dream and dream and dream…
In the dead of a night, I will escape without a glance backward.
I'll run away to a far faraway land of green hills with the white
sheep and sleepy shepherds, and thousands of silver fountains and
mysterious forest with its elves and fairy creatures which are
inhabited in the heart of the jungle near the little lake of youth. My
wooden hut is in the center of one of the hills underneath the moving
clouds and the twinkling stars. It has a small stable next to the
garden where I keep my golden stallion. I have cows and sheep and
gouts. Every morning with the smell of the jasmines in the air I wake
up. I can wash myself in the fountain near my house with the cold and
fresh water. My breakfast is natural milk and butter and eggs with hot
thick bread right from the village in the way of the fountain.
Everyday I work on my land and cultivate my new seeds. I plain
daffodils and buttercups and forget-me-nots and then I herd the cows
and also shear the sheep in the summertime. I ring the cows like the
western movies and go hunting the elks of woods with my dog Rufous. In
meanwhile I sometimes explore the mysterious woods for treasures and
buried fairy tales. Like the old speaking tree or the angle of the
lake. I am even invited to little elves' tea party on Thursdays
nights.
There is no pollution, corruption. No racism and no betrayal and
hatred. No money, no cars. There could be high-speed internet though!
People are all friendly and approachable with hearts, engulfed with
hospitality and generosity. Every moment is blessing and every second
is a miracle. I am so absent-minded about the passing time in this
land. With a glance, I am in front of my chimney, reading novels with
companion of a cup of hot chocolate in wintertime. The sky is blue and
the breeze is lovely. The vistas of the wilderness are scenic and
graceful. The twilight is wonderful and the sunset is splendid.
Then I fall into reality. The big fat filthy reality. Of course the
reality is full of pleasing moments but that was really something. I
know that it was a dream, a sheer dream, but I was a part of that. I
was happy and full of life and joy which exists in the face of the
earth, no, hold on, which exists in the entire universe. That dream
was a parallel universe, another universe. I know I could be happy
here, too. I know. I know when I dream about that heaven, that
dreamland, I imprison my soul in a breakable cocoon which can be
cracked by a slight slap of the reality. The big fat filthy reality.
Every day I wake up and breathe the pollutions and every night I go
to bed and live my life. Somewhere with a warmer and brighter sun,
with greener graces, with a longer and starry nights, with white
clouds and blue sky. With happy and smiley people. With you and all my
friends around me…

The importance of PAIRWORK in TOP NOTCH series
I really did not think of PAIRWORK as an important teaching technique. Yet, I really wanted my students to develop their speaking skills in the class. Some of them were shy to talk to me. For some, I had no time, for some I really feared talking to because of the number of mistakes they made in their speaking, and for others I didn't know how to stop them once they started on the talking thing!!!! I kept thinking about this problem for a long time. And at last I realized the solution is to pay attention to PAIRWORKS in the class. Here I list their advantages and I hope student and teachers do their best to make pairworks more effective in the class.
Here are some tips to have successful pairwork practices:
- Increasing the time of speaking: The time students spend talking to their partners is much longer than the time they spend talking to their teacher.
- No stress: Talking to a classmate is much easier than to a teacher (especially one like me!!!)
- Limiting the mistakes: All pairworks have been modeled and their pattern is well organized by the authors. So this will give the student less risk at making mistakes.
- FUN...FUN...FUN: I personally enjoy seeing a noisy class with everyone busy talking with their partners. This makes the class fun, less formal and more efficient.
Here are some tips to have successful pairwork practices:
- explain to the students why you think pairwork is important
- act wisely in choosing who gets to be paired with who
- walk around the class, stand by partners for a couple of seconds and encourage them
- encourage students to use the model in the book
- choose your own partner and enjoy sharing your ideas with him/her
- ask them questions about their partners' point of view on the subject
- swap partners to get better results
- pay attention to shy students
I hope next time you have a pairwork, you have fun and faith in what you are doing,,,

Unwritten Letters
You told me to write a letter to you, and I asked you why. You shrugged and looked away and the subject was dropped.
I cannot write a letter to you because there was too much to say and there were too little words. What would you have me write? That I look for excuses to talk to you longer on the phone, or if we were in the car? That I get annoyed if you ask me to rest instead of seeing you because I prefer the latter? That I replay the conversations we've had in my head and smile? That I look for your car whenever we drive past its usual parking space? (Or the fact that I feel sad and a little lonely now that it's vacant?) That I look for you at all?
In my head I did exactly that, I wrote many letters to you.
I kept them in my eyes, I locked them behind pursed lips. But if you listen; you'll find them screaming between skipped heartbeats, in every impulse, as loud as the ocean.
